The best dSLR is not DX format. But if you want the best dSLR from nikon as a DX format that would be the D300s. This is because it is the end of the line as for DX sized cameras.
However if you want to really kick it you need an FX camera and FX lenses. Search "crop factor" for more info on the DX and FX issue.

The difference with using camera phones is that you get clearer/ more precise/ magical pictures with DSLR, i have relatives and friends who have that type of camera and ofcourse they have it because they can afford it. and they do take magnificent pictures.
